Standard Mailer Box Sizes: The Complete Dimensions Chart

Every standard mailer box footprint in one reference chart — internal dimensions, external dimensions, cubic volume, billable DIM weight, and the products each size actually fits. Bookmark it; this is the chart our engineers start from on every custom run.

1. How to Read This Chart

All sizes are listed as internal usable dimensions in the order Length × Width × Depth — the same convention used on every quote and dieline we produce. External dimensions run roughly 1/4 inch larger in each direction once both board walls and score tolerances are counted, and carriers measure the external size when billing. If you are measuring a product to match against this chart, add protection room first — our full method is in the guide on how to choose the right mailer box size.

  • Volume is internal cubic inches — your usable packing space.
  • DIM weight uses the domestic carrier formula (L × W × H) ÷ 139 on the nominal size; carriers round external measurements up, so treat it as a floor, not a ceiling.
  • Recommended style is the construction our engineers reach for first at that footprint — not the only option.

2. The Standard Mailer Box Sizes Chart

Twelve footprints cover the overwhelming majority of e-commerce shipments, from a 4-inch cube for jewelry to the 14 × 12 × 5 bulk shipper.

3. The Two Sizes That Run the Subscription Industry

Two rows of this chart deserve a callout. The 10" × 8" × 4" is the classic subscription footprint: deep enough for a curated bundle of bottles, jars, and soft goods, small enough to keep DIM weight near 2.3 lbs. The 12" × 9" × 4" is its big sibling for apparel-led and premium boxes. Programs standardize on one of these for a structural reason beyond fit — a fixed footprint means a standing dieline, identical packing SOPs every month, and freight rates your finance team can forecast. If you run a recurring program, start with our subscription mailer boxes — they are built around exactly these two footprints, with seasonal artwork swaps on the same dieline.

4. When No Standard Size Fits

Standard sizes are a starting grid, not a limit. A product that rattles in the nearest standard footprint costs you void fill on every order and DIM-weight penalties on many of them — a custom dieline cut to your exact product usually pays for itself within the first production run. Our engineers generate custom CAD dielines within 24 hours at zero engineering fee, in any dimension the converting lines can fold. Browse the full custom mailer boxes specification or work through the sizing method in our size selection guide before you commit.
